Anns Grove Primary School’s nursery

At our school we have a nursery for 3 and 4 year old children.

Our nursery provides a welcoming, nurturing environment where children feel safe, happy, and ready to learn. We have a dedicated nursery classroom with 26 places, offering a calm and purposeful space for children to settle and thrive. The nursery shares toilets and a large outdoor learning area with the Reception classes, helping children become familiar with the wider Early Years environment and supporting a smooth transition as they move through the early stages of their education with us.

Children who attend nursery for a full day stay for lunch. Families can choose to send a packed lunch from home or purchase a school dinner. Nursery children eat their lunch in the school dining room, supported by staff to develop independence and positive social routines. We cater for dietary requirements and ensure lunchtime is a positive, social experience for all children.

Our curriculum

Our nursery curriculum is carefully designed to give children the best possible start to their learning journey. In the first instance, we place a strong focus on the prime areas of learning:

  • Communication and language
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Physical development

These areas form the foundations for all future learning. Many children join our nursery with developing language skills, confidence, and independence, so we prioritise building vocabulary, listening, turn-taking, self-regulation, and physical strength before moving on to more formal learning.

Alongside this, children begin to explore the specific areas of learning through high-quality play and adult-led activities. Our curriculum includes rich storytelling, songs and rhymes, early mark-making, counting, problem-solving, and exploration of the world. Learning is delivered through a balance of adult-led teaching and carefully planned play opportunities that allow children to practise and embed new skills.

We value strong partnerships with parents and carers, working together to support each child’s learning and development.

Our learning environment

We provide a calm, stimulating environment that nurtures development across all areas of the EYFS. Children enjoy free-flow access to a spacious outdoor area every day, where learning opportunities are thoughtfully planned to support all aspects of their growth.

Outdoors

Physical development sits at the heart of our provision. Children benefit from a wide range of high-quality experiences, including climbing frames, trees for exploration, balancing equipment, and large-scale movement activities. These opportunities help children to build strength, coordination, confidence, and resilience.

Indoors

Our nursery offers a rich and inviting environment designed to spark curiosity and creativity.

Children have access to carefully planned areas that promote all aspects of learning, including communication and language, literacy, mathematics, and expressive arts. Resources are thoughtfully chosen to encourage exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative play, while cosy spaces provide opportunities for quiet reflection and developing social skills.

Our learning environments are continually enhanced to offer new and exciting experiences, ensuring that every child is inspired, challenged, and supported in their learning journey.

Settling in

We understand that starting nursery is a big step for children and families. To support this transition, we offer settling-in sessions, which usually begin with a 1.5 hour session, followed by children attending during their normal hours.

Where possible, we also offer home visits for children starting nursery. Home visits help staff begin to build positive relationships with children and families in a familiar environment, support children to feel more confident about coming to nursery, and allow us to gather important information about children’s interests, routines, and needs.

All settling arrangements are flexible and can be adapted to meet individual children’s needs. If a child finds settling more challenging, we work closely with families to adjust the transition process so that children feel safe, secure, and confident.

Uniform

Wearing school uniform in nursery is not compulsory. Children are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that allows them to play, explore, and move freely. Families who wish to do so are welcome to dress their child in school uniform.
