Overview

We believe that a high-quality English curriculum should nurture children’s love of reading, writing and oracy. Our carefully structured and ambitious English curriculum provides a wide range of purposeful opportunities for pupils to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills.

Writing lessons are planned and delivered following our writing process:

  1. Immersion in text and vocabulary
  2. WAGOLL – look at modelled texts showing age-expected outcomes
  3. Skills taught – over a series of lessons
  4. Draft writing – writing the text
  5. Edit writing – improve and edit pupils’ writing

From nursery, phonics is taught daily through the Read Write Inc. programme, and we are a Ruth Miskin–trained school committed to a consistent, high-quality approach to synthetic phonics. Through daily lessons, targeted support, well-matched home reading books and regular staff training.

In Key Stage 2, daily reciprocal reading sessions develop key reading skills such as retrieval, vocabulary, inference and fluency through fast-paced, in-depth exploration of a wide range of engaging texts. Children are supported through carefully matched reading books, regular assessment, and targeted small-group or one-to-one support, helping all pupils to develop a strong love of reading and achieve age-related expectations.
